AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY
APPEAL FOR PUBLIC ESTEEM. ( Per Press Association ) AUCKLAND, Aug. 30. The chairman of the University Col lege Council (Mr. T. U. Wells), speaking to the Commerce Students’ Society, said the Auckland University College did not occupy the place in the public esteem that, it should. In Christchurch and Dunedin the universities were regarded with a respect, veneration and love that did not appear to exist in Auckland. The college was in a most difficult position, being up against it. financially. It was shockingly understaffed ami the professors were shockingly overworked. The council did not know how to get relief. If the public realised what the university meant in the Jives of young people of the city, the college should not be in such want.
