annual concert The Duchess Theatre was the scene of great excitement on Tuesday evening, August 20, when the Wanganui East School delighted with their annual concert. A long and varied pro gramme was presented, the opening item being a rousing chorus of welcome to the audience by Form 11. This was followed by two folk dances, daintily tripped by the wee folk of Standard 1. The next item was a very popular one—Barry Trussell and his zylophone—and was encored by one and all. A quaint song and dance by Standards 1 and 11, entitled “The Witch’s Song,” caused much amuse* r ment. the witches wearing the traditional costume completed by the presence of a very realistic cat. The playet entitled “Red Riding Hood,” performed by Standard I'* pupils, was received with great glee by the children, especially when the tierce-looking wolk made h;s appearance. An enjoyable class song, “Fai: Shines the Moon,” was then given by Form I. This was followed by ’an other charming folk dance by Stand ards I and 11. A w’ell-receivcd item was the group of part songs rendered by the school choir, who sang “Nae Luck Aboot the House,” “Oh Hush Thee My Baby” and “ Pokare Kare Ana.” After a sort interval the curtain rose on the delightful cantata, “The Land of Christmas.” The amusing dialogue, bright songs, dainty dances and spectacular dressing made this item a very popular one. Form 1 girls looked very gay in their paper bonnets as they executed a folk dame. A LDutch song then fo lowed—“ The Zuyder Zee,” which ended with a clog dance. An amusing play. “Joan Gets Her Way,” by Form 11, pleased the audience. The concert was brought to a close by a rousing “Chinaman , Chorus” and tap dance. During the evening Mr. Mills the chairman of the school committee, took the opportunity of thanking the staff for their work and announced that the concert had been a great sue K financially.
