AIL shades of political thought were well represented last evening when there was a large attendance |of electors to hear the Minister of Lands (Sir Alfred Ransom) deliver his first address locally in the present, political campaign. After dealing forcibly with the criticism offered by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr. M. J. Savage), Sir Alfred Ransom traversed the difficult period through which the Government had passed and the various measures enacted to overcome these difficulties. He also referred to the clear evidences of returning prosperity. The meeting was remarkably orderly, the Minister speaking for over an hour and a-half without a single interruption Only a few questions were asked. NOVELTY MATCHES TROTTER BEATS CYCLIST. 4 CARNIVAL AT ADDINGTON. [ Per Press Association. ] CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 25. In a challenge match of one mile at the Addington trotting ground on Saturday, Mr. J. R. McKenzie's horse Taxpayer beat H. G. Watson, champion cyclist, from a flying start. Taxpayer took the lead passing the stands, where Watson tucked in behind Taxpayer and trailed him until the straight was reached. There was a great tussle over the last furlong, Taxpayer beating the cyclist by a head. Sectional times were: Two furlongs, 34sec.; half-mile, lmin. 9 2-ssec.; six furlongs, J min. 46 l-ssec. and the full distance, 2min. 17 l-ssec. In a walking race of one mile F. W. Dukes, the Canterbury champion, easily beat the trotter Fairyland in lOmin. 17sec.
