FIFTH GRADE REPS

WIN FOR WANGANUI. PALMERSTON NORTH DEFEATED. The representative match between Wanganui fifth grade representatives and the Palmerston North fourth grade reps, was played on Spriggens Park on Saturday and resulted in a win for Wanganui by 12 points to 6. 'Phe home team, however, proved superior for the major part of the game, gaining the ball from most of the scrummages. Faulty handling by both sets of backs spoilt the early stages. No kicks at goal were put over during the day owing to the strong Jind. Wanganui won the toss and took the ball into the visitors’ territory where it was cleared by Rush. The home team was awarded a free kick outside the defenders’ twenty-five, which failed to go over. Following a free kick, Palmerston shifted the play to the Wanganui end, but were prevented from scoring by the opposing forwards, who seized an opportunity presented by a dropped ball to turn defence into attack. The first score of the match was gained when the ball came out along the line of backs to Delves, who passed out again to Workman on the outside and sent him over. The kick failed.— Wanganui 3, Palmerston North 0. Cubdy started a nice movement from loose rucking and the ball came out to Paki, who scored Wanganui's second try. FOR RANFURLY SHIELD WAIRARAPA’S CHALLENGE CANTERBURY RETAIN TROPHY I Per Press Association. ] CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 24. With fine back play and a solid defence Canterbury retained the Ranfurly Shield in the first home challenge match of the season, boafing Wairarapa by 27 points to 16 in a fast, and interesting game at Lancaster Park. Tho strength of the south-west gale which favoured Canterbury in the first half was a great factor in the game. At half-time Canterbury led by 19 points to nil, the points being the result of some brilliant rearguard efforts. Wairarapa scored soon after the interval and showed form which indicated that they had a good chance of pulling the game out of the fire. Two more tries to Canterbury, however. both the result of slashing attcaks, made Wairarapa’s job look too great. Wairarapa attacked with determination and it was splendid defence which kept their score down to 16. The Canterbury backs played well, with McPhail. Polson and Mortlock showing brilliant form at times. Parsons and McAuliffe did wonders on defence. The Canterbury forwards, considerably out-weighted, played a dogged game and never let their opponents dominate the position. In the Wairarapa pack Ward, Trass and Laing played excellent football. Srtginfellow, Martelli and Habib were the pick of the visiting backs. Canterbury scored first when Deavol! broke through from a scramble brilliantly. He picked up. drew the Wairarapa full-back, Henderson, and sent on to Sweeney, who scored behind the* posts. IDeavoll con verting. McPhail was the next scorer, Donvoll’s kick failing. From a loose rush Parsons snapped up and ran with McPhail to the Wairarapa twenty fixe before sending on a well-judged pass. The winger was not unopposed, but he burst past Fuller with a powerful fend, treated the full-back the same way, and scored a fine try. Deavoll missed the kick.—Canterbury 11, Wairarapa 0. Innes scored Canterbury’s next try, which was not converted. McPhail, receiving from Mortlock, beat three Wairarapa backs and passed to Rankin, who scored in the corner. Deavoll goaled beautifu ly and at halftime Canterbury 19 led Wairarapa 0. With the advantage of the wind in the second spell Wairarapa reduced Canterbury’s lead, though the chai lengers’ ascendancy in tbe second spell was not as marked as that of ('anberbury in the first spell. Devine scored from a scramble. Fuller’s kick missing. Canterbury retaliated. From a mid-field scrum McAuliffe whipped the ball out to Parsons, to Mortlock, to Polson, ami Polson, going between Stringfellow and Buick, went on alone to swerve in past Henderson and score a splendid try between the posts. Dea vol! converting. Later McPhail passed to Parsons, to Mortlock, to Polson, and with Wairarapa right out of position Polson scored at the corner, Dea volt’s kick failing. Fuller missed with a penalty kick, but a knock-on put Wairarapa on the attack and from a Ward hurled himself over. Fuller converting. Canterbury 27, Wairarapa 8. Stringfellow, who had gone to second five-eighths, was playing brilliantly on attack and Laing, receiving from him, passed in to Martelli, who scored between the posts, Fuller goaling.
