KNOCK-OUT COMPETITION WAVERLEY, RATANA, PIRATES. SATURDAY’S THREE WINNERS. A knock-out competition was opened by the Wanganui Metropolitan Rugby Union on Saturday for the Charity Cup. Waverley defeated Old Boys by 15 to 12. Pirates accounted lor Technical Old Boys by .14 points to 9, and Katana was successful against Marist by 19 points to 9. Saturday’s matches will leave Kaierau, Pirates, Waverley and Ratana to play off to decide which teams shall enter the final. A close tussle is expected between Ratana and Waverley and Pirates will make every effort, to put Kaierau out of the running. WANGANUI MATCHES KNOCK-OUT COMPETITION FIK-ST ROUND COMMENCES The game betwe-en L’iratcs and Technical College Old Boys on Saturday jn the first round of the “knock-out” competition resulted iu a win for Pirates by 14 points to 9. In the first half the play was not bright and movements were patchy. There were many infringements in this half which slowed the game up considerably, until lx, joss .snapped up the ball from a loose mill of players and ran past three oi four of the opposing team to score. Welch missed. Anderson, who was playing half-back for Pirates, dropped hack to full-back and Lind lillei his position. The score at half-time was 3 ail following a good penalty kick by Inglis. In the second spell the game became more sparkling and produced some fast scoring methods. A penalty kick by Welch from 10 yards inside the halfway line opened up the points again. A concerted rush by the Pirate backs resulted in a fast passing movement and one of the best scores of the day. lc<h. Old Boys assumed the lead by another penalty kick by Welch, but repeated and determined forward attacks by Pirates added two more tries to their total, on-e being converted. The match finished at this total with Pirates retaining fiie superiority from here on until the final whistle. Points, for Pirates were gained by: Berryman, Agnew and Kench (one try each) and a penalty and a conversion by J nglis. Kjoss scored for Tech. Old Boys and \\ elch kicked two penalties. Air. D. TOMMY CHASE RETURNS FACTOR IN RATANA’S WIN NATIVES DEFINITELY ON TOP Tommy Chase, fresh from his lour with the native team in Australia, was in the Ratana fifteen which played Marist at Ratanan on Saturday. The native fifteen played a wonderful game throwing the ball about in spectacular fashion. The final score of 19—9 correctly set forth the merits of the two sides. Chase's presence seeihed to give the Alaoiis confidence and Alarist had to defend for a great portion of the mutch. WIN FOR WAVERLEY TWO EVEN TEAMS PLAY FIELD GOAL WINS THE AIATCH Wanganui and Old Boys and Waverley played a very even match on Waverley s home ground. The wind affected it considerably, both from a kicking and a passing point of view. Old Boys had difficulty in finding a team and played a man short. Old Boys led by six to three at the beginning. Then Waverley drew level, six all. Waverley registered a further try and converted.—Waverley 11, uld Boys 6. Old Boys landed a penalty goal and the sccro read; Waverley 11, Old Boys 9. Old Boys registered a further three points froei a try and until near the end of the game the scores were: Old Boys 12, Waverley IL Petersen then drop-kicked from the li-eld and sent the ball between the posts, making the final score: Waver ley 15, Old Boys 12. The Wanganui team proved the onh winners in the matches played to-day :it the opening of the annual tournament between the Wairarapa, Wellington, Wanganui ami Alanawatu - primary school Rugby representatives. Wanganui defeated Wellington by eight points to nil. while Alanawatu ami Wairarapa staged a throe-all draw. 'The Wanganui match was played on a ground which had dried up after the recent rain. A heavy wind handicapped the Wanganui boys in the first spell, but th? forwards played a splendid game throughout. Tries woor scored bv P.ergerson and Toatoa, Signal converting one of them. 'I he prospects of the Wanganui repre sentativos appear bright. The team ar lived on Friday afternoon and were bil lofed out. They will have tomorrow free, and on Monday they will play Manawatn, Wellington being drawn to play Wairarapa. On Wednesday they will play Wairarapa., while Alanawatu and Wellington will meet in fjie other match. The annual meeting of delegates is to be held on Alonday at Carterton, while (hi Tuesday the morning wil] be occupied by a visit to the Waingawa Freezing Works. In the afternoon the visitors will be taken on a motor trip organised by the Rotary Club.
