EFFECT OF POLL IN ALBERTA TWENTY CANDIDATES ELECTED FURTHER 36 IN THE LEAD. Received May 23, 10.10 p.m. CALGARY, Aug. 23. Alberta is definitely headed for a Social Credit Government led by William Aberhart. At 10 o’clock the provincial election returns showed that 20 Social Credit candidates had been elected and 36 were leading. The United Farmers had two elected, Conservatives three, and Liberals one. A Vancouver message states that Social Credit candidates swept the rural ridings and were among the leaders as tho proportional representation count proceeded. In the cities the early morning position is:— Elected.—Social Credit, 31; Liberals, 1. Leading. —Social Credit, 29; Liberals, 1; Vnited Farmers, J. The Premier, Mr. Reid, end at least four of his United Farmer Government Ministers have beeu personally defeated. Mr. Howson, the Liberal leader, was Mr. Aberhart himself was not a candidate, but it is believed will run at a by-election. He received the returns at the Prophetic Bible Institute, where he organised the Social Credit League. Mr. Aberhart has announced that experts wil aid in establishing social credit. He will invite Major Douglas to assist in the initial administration of the work. Major Douglas, already under consultation contract to the Alberta Government, said that some mouths ago Mr. Aberhart was performing good work in makng the people Social Credit conscious, but he didr not favour Mr. Aberhart’s plans and aims. The Aberhart plan proposes to pay a basis dividend tentatively of 25 dollars monthly to every adult and an allowance for children from a levy on the unearned increment in nonnegotiable certificates issued by a proposed credit office.
