PREMIER HEADS PARTY / CAMPAIGN. OTTAWA, July 1. Uncertainty and speculation concerning the leadership of the Conservative Party in Canada were dissipated when tho Primo Minister, Mr. Bennett, apparently fully restored to health, announced that he would continue his work and head the Government during the coming election campaign. In the latter stages of the closing session of Parliament Mr. Bennett dis.played his customary vigour, and scorned confident of his ability to withstand the strain of a hard contest. The old Parliament, now dissolved, was in existence more than five years, which is unusual in this country. The election will not come before tho Fall, probably in late September or early October. There will be numerous candidates representing movements, causes and theories, but the real contest, in all probability, will be between the Conservatives, with the prestige of Govern ment and Mr. Bennett’s dominant leadership, and tho Liberals under Mr. Mackenzie King, former Prime Minister and a veteran of public life. The old parties are not. now alarmed by tho ‘ ‘ C.C.F. ’’ —Co-operative <Commonwealth Federation—which promised for a time to upset political alignments. There will be candidates representing Labour, Communist candidates, candidates of sundry Social Credit groups, but none of these causes has a national organisation ami probably will not greatly affect the nature of tho Government that will hold office after the eleelion. Tentative gestures made from time to time from various quarters towards the establishment of a Government representing all political parties have fallen flat, under the opposition of both Mr. Bennett and Mr. King, and no steps in this direction arc probable—at least before the election.
