TEMPERATURES VERY HIGH. RURAL DISTRICTS SUFFER. Received Aug. 23, 7.30 p.m. LONDON, Aug. 23. Tho temperatures in London to-day equalled those on July 14, which, hitherto, was the warmest dy of the year. From 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. the reading did not fall below 84 degrees, and at 2 o’clock 85 degrees was recorded, three degrees higher than at the same hour yesterday. Higher temperatures than these were recorded in various parts of the country, and Greenwich had the highest reading for years. Continuation of the drought is causing increased anxiety in many rural districts, where water supplies are nearly exhausted.
