GUARANTEED PRICES

Sir. -Permit me to congratulate IM Labour Party on their guaranteed prices .scheme for fanners, and at the >ame time ask them what difference there is between the present Govern mcnt and their principles? Wc have heard for many months that the Government is exploiting the working man. Tell me. is the price of butter at Is 9d per lb. in order to giye the guaranteed price for primary products, not exploitation? What power has Ihe Labour Party, even if it became the Government. got that would enable it tn carry out their scheme without wrecking private enterprise? The State cannot force wages and salaries up by Act of Parliament. People will just go 0,-W of business to save their capital, a» unemployment will be even worse. Just l ow the working man will pav Is 9d a lb. then, will take some explaining! It is hard enough to pay Is now. Those great schemes worked out on paper look very well. It’s the practical application that is the test; just how a scheme will work can be foreseen to a considerable extent by the different, sections of life it will encroach on. The home market in New Zealand is made up in the majority by those earning a living, and any price scheme must affect nearly everybody in the Dominion. I have no sympathy wit h the present Government, ami have an open mind to examine both Labour and Democrat platforms for the coming election. Any reasonable man will admit that with the present unemployment tax. sales tax, etc., already making inroads into the family purse, the working man cannot very well bo expected to save the farmers and provide pie many other good things promised out. of his pocket. Does the Labour Party anticipate all of us subscribing to the cult of the nude? This is the only hope of providing its guaranteed price scheme! So leave off buving clothes.- I am, etc., WELL TAXED.
