In his address at the annual confer ence of the North Island Motor Union this morning, the president (Mr. W. A. O’Callaghan. Hawera) remarked on the substantial membership increase, the total at present being 31,590. an increase of 3270 over last Referring to taxation, the president said: *'l feel that the unfairness of, lhe taxation legislation justifies me in directing public attention to the fact that the Income'fax Department is now claiming income tax from, such organ isations as Automobile Associations. Tax is demanded on all income other I than subscriptions, ami scant allow lance is permitted for the co \ of earn ing that, income, nor any regard had to the, fad that any such income is J derived from within the circle of its i own membership, the staff proI vident funds have been assessed, j thereby depleting the savings of individual members of the staff, which I t hey have been hoping to accumulate I for ultimate retirement. The payment j of taxation is never a pleastint operation, but in the ea.'*' of non trading i concerns I see no justification whati ever for the rapacity of the, taxI gatherer.”
