WANGANUI RUGBY

TO-DAY’S MATCHES KNOCK-OUT COMPETITION In view of tlie fact thazt Kaierau has won the senior cup for 1935, the Metropolitan Rugby Union has decided to conclude the season with a knock out competition for the Ch.an.ty Cup. Three matches have been set down for to-day. Pi. a.es v. Technical Old Boys on Spriggens Park; Waverley v. Old Boys at Waverley and Marista v. Ratana at Ratana. There should be a great deal, of interest occasioned in this competition in the hope that the honour of winning it will go to some club other than Kaierau. Waverley, runners-up in the senior competition, have great hopes, ; but Marist and Pirates, two teams which showed marked improvement towards the last, and Old Boys, always : an unknown quantity until they actually take the field, all have chances. To-day’s mat’ch between Pirates and Technical Old -Boys will decide whether the blacks really have improved. They will have to play all out against the ' blue and whites if the latter field anything of a team. Waverley’s hopes in the initial stages of the round will depend upon whether the side can account for Old Boys. It will be one of those surprising twists so common to Rugby if Old Boys succeed in defeating the 1 side from “over the border.’’ This should be a really good match, probably the best of the afternoon. If Marist field their best side they should succeed against Ratana. REFEREES APPOINTED. The following referees have been appointed for to-day’s matches:— Senior. Pirates v. Tech.
