Southland defeated the touring Wairarapa Rugby team by 21 points to 18 in a game played on a heavy ground and in boisterous weather to-day. Southland scored ten tries, only two of which were converted, while Wairarapa scored only one try, the remainder of the points being secured by Fuller, who kicked three penalty goals, a field goal and a converted try. The game was not of a particularly high standard but the rapid scoring kept the crowd interested. Wairarapa were outplayed and in the end South land had complete control of the game and finished strongly. Wairarapa showed glimpse.*- of combined work but were at times best when spoiling and breaking through on Southland’s mistakes. The inclusion of Hamilton gave greater thrust to the Southland backs, whose performance was an improve ment on two previous displays. Wairarapa played with a strong wind in the first spell. Southland opened the scoring when Sharp made a good opening for Thornbury and ran outside the wing to score in the corner. Fuller kicked his first penalty goal but Southland forwards stormed the Wairarapa line and Irwin scored. Fuller again turned a penalty to advantage, making the scores even. The Southland backs were having plenty of opportunities and singed several good passing bonis, one of which was linisheil off by (lie the forwards, U. George scoring. The half-time scores were: Southland 9, Wairarapa 6. In the first 15 minutes of the second half .14 points were scored by South land. Then the Wairarapa forwards came to life, beating Southland for possession, and the visitors scored nine points in six minutes, Buick scoring the only try. Southland returned to the attack, the forwards dominating the remainder of the game. Wairarapa were within striking distance only once, when Fuller kicked his third penalty.
