Last night and this morning Taranaki experienced the most bitter weather of this winter. Temperatures were very low and heavy snow fell on the mountain and ranges, extending down all the tracks, and lor a considerable distance beyond the radius line. Ploughs were neecsasry to clear the tracks to North Egiuont and Dawson Falls hostels, which had a fall c-f 9 inches of snow, while interruptions to the communication lines prevented contact with Stratford House, where the depth of snow was twelve inches. The north and east ot the mountain countryside to a very wide area is covered with a mantle of sjiow several inches deep, while snow fell in Stratford for several hours, and over an hour in Inglewood this morning. New Plymouth experienced hart and sleet. Motor-cars reaching the town from the south carried little heaps of hail and snow on the running boards and the hoods. About noon conditions improved, and the temperatures rose, but early this afternoon the weather was again threatening. SNOW AT STRATFORD COUNTRYSIDE COVERED. ( Per Press Association. ) STRATFORD, Aug. 21. There has been bitterly cold weatuier with rain and wind here during the last few days. Snow conimencc'l to fall this morning and is still falling.
