KAWARAU DAM

OPENING OF GATES. STATEMENT (’HALLENG'ED, ( Ter Press Association. I INVERCARGILL, Aug. 5. “A distortion of the facts,” was the way a prominent Cromwell resident, described a statement made by a miner last, week that 500 nieu had been thrown out of work as the result of the open ing of the Kawarau dam gates. There had not, he said, been anything like 500 men working in the bed of the Kawarau or Molyneux Rivers. Those who were working in the Kawarau (from 60 to 80 meh) prior to the opening of the gates, had been joined by a number of other miners when the river was practically dewatered. The maximum rise of the river as a result of the opening of the gates had been two feet, not seven feet as alleged. It was true that one miner won £5O during the closing of the gales and others lesser sums. Intimation of the closing of the gates had been given to those concerned, as had notice of the opening. As a matter of fact the gates had not been closed to help miners or prospectors, but to enable certain investigations to be carried out. by the engineer of the Kawaran Mining Company
