Demanding immediate action by the League of Nations, the Polish Press is hysterical. It considers that the attempt to turn Danzig into a free port violates treaty rights, and demands energetic action. The root of the dispute is the expansion of the Polish port of Gdynia. Despite tho agreement that Polish overseas trade shall be divided equally between Danzig and Gdynia, it has been found impossible to make cither port pay. Consequently the Poles have diverted trade to their own port, in which £6,000,000 has been sunk. Maladministration of the Danzig finances has brought the city to the verge of bankruptcy, leading to devaluation of the guilden after consultation with Berlin, but not Warsaw. The political inexperience of the Danzig leaders has aggravated the crisis. Germany, however, is cautious and is unlikely to iihperil friendship between Poland and Germany for the sake of Danzig,
