AicElwain, an ex-pupil who has been awarded a post graduate scholarship in psycho, ogy which entitles him to continue his studies in England. The Mayor. -Jr. W. J. Rogers, and Air. D. Dustin, president ot ihe Wanganui and Jlistrict Development. League, attended the function. Air. .1. I’. Newton, the principal of the school, expressed his pleasure at having the opportunity of giving one of his former pupils, now a distinguished scholar, a welcome to his old school. ‘‘He came to the school in .1928 from the \ ictoria Avenue School aed three years afterwards gained the University Entrance examination,” Air. Newton said, "and then undertook stages for his B.A. degrees. In his sixth year at secondary school he passed the final B.A. degree examination together witii two other students, Brenda Hunt and Doris AlcClymciit. A year later at University he was awarded his AJ.A. degree and a postgraduate scholarship in psychology. This is his fine scholastic record,” Air. Newton added, "but he shone in sport as well as in study. A junior and senior athletic champion, he was also

a member of the first fifteen and has two track records still standing to his credit. Yet another phase of his school career was his uniform goctl conduct, both as a young student and later as a councillor and prefect. 'The school is proud of him and his'achievements and it is pleasing to know that he passed through its portals on the way to success. I am sure that he will achieve even greater amours,” he concluded. A camera was presented by the principal on behalf of the staff and pupils. McElwain. •‘Wanganui is proud of its young citizen and the public ui Wanganui join with the school in congratulating him.” Air. Rogers said. "He is a New Zealander who has made good and we hope that he Will reap many honours in the Old Country, as others from New Zealand have done. We wish him the best of success and we hope that he will bring his knowledge and experience back for the benefit of his J orne laud. ” Air. Dustin added congratulations to Air. AicElwain and spoke of the advantage received in travelling. He also remarked on the sacrifice made by tho parents of all students to educate their children. ‘‘Mr. AicElwain is lo be congratulated on his son,’’ he concluded. lu reply, Mr. AicElwain said: "1 am not able to express my feelings fully at being back in my heme town and at my old school. 1 can feel again the atmosphere which surrounds it as well as when 1 was a student. That feeling is a comfort to mo and that same atmosphere is present when old boys meet in other surroundings to chat over old times and new changes in the life of our former school. J must thank my parents for my education and in conclusion 1 thank you all for your kind reception and gifts.’’
