SCUFFLES WITH POLICE
PARIS DEMONSTRATION PROTEST AT PAY CUTS. PARIS, July 111. Despite the official ban, civil servants are, determined to hold a mass demonstration of protest against the reductions in their pay, but they were circumvented by 6000 mounted foot police on duty, detachments of whom repeatedly charged, arresting 500 and restoring order early in the evening without grave incident. The size of the meeting was aulo jnatically reduced by locking all the underground railwav exits. The, encounters were never more than scuffles, the police buffeting the demon strators with gloved hands, the demonstrators retaliating with their fists.
