HUNTERVILLE

ST. JAMES- THEATRE. “THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO.’’ It’s always advisable in film reviews to avoid the carping phrase, “it’s a nee film, but.” Either a film is good or it is not. ‘The Count of Moute Cristo” is, beyond question, the great est production for many years. I know that the first question some of you cynics ask when a statement like that is made is “Oh, yeah? What’s the catch?” Believe you me, there are so few good films nowadays that the reviewer gets a rea kick out of advising the public to go and see a show. Some disgruntled film addicts have been complaining that reviewers have been trying to be clever; have been knocking films for the sake of preening their rhetorical feathers before an awed public. Therefore, never believe the critics they write to me. The cast is amazing— simply amazing. Robert Donat i? a new star and the man who played Abbe Faria had the mark of genius in bis presentation. And what’s more (this is for hard-bitten, unbelieving, cinema-haunting knockers) —Tf I knew any more adjectives with which to praise the film I’d use them. A simple story which has tried to be faithful to the author.
