KING’S JUBILEE. A meeting of residents of the Waverley district was held ou Saturday for the purpose of making arrangements for the holding of some form of celebration in connection with the King's 'Jubilee. After some discussion it was decided to call a meeting of ladies for this afternoon (Tuesday) at 2.30 p.m., in the Town Board room, when some special entertainment for the children will be arranged. PERSONAL. Mr. and Mrs. Harold II in man. Wellington, were visitors to Waitotara for Easter, staying with Mr. and Mrs. J. Jlopk i nson. Miss P. Gray, who has been spending a holiday at New Plymouth and Wellington, has returned home. Mr. R. L. Muir, New I’lymouth, has been staying with his brother, Mr. W. J. Muir, Brasses Street. Mr. ami Mrs. K. Allen have returned to Wellington after spending Piaster with Mr. and Mrs. S. Broniiley. HARDY SEPTUAGENARIAN. A journey on liorseba'-k (hat, if not creating a record, must stand very highly to the credit of the rider concerned was accomplished bv Mr. H. Pepper, Waverley, who has celebrated bis 77th birthday. Leaving Waverley at 5 a.m., Mr. Pepper set out on n 60•mile journey to see his daughter, Mrs. R. McMillan, Te Popo, and he arrived at his destintion at 4.15 p.m. His sole refreshment, on the way was a sandwich and a. glass of ale. A proof of his unusual fitness ami hardiness was given when at Ihe conclusion of the ride, Mr. Pepper was not a whit, the worse, and went out riding I again the next afternoon. RETURNED SOLDIERS. ANNUAL MEETING HELD. The annual meeting of the Waverley Returned Soldiers’ Association was held on Thursday, Dr. P. V. Graves presiding. The president, in his annual report, said the year had been very quiet, and the activities of the association were in a dormant state owing to a considerably reduced membership aud lack of interest. At present there were only j:»ue financial members. Assistance) had been given to between 20 and 30 men passing through Waverley who were “down ami out.” Only one local man had been assisted. There was a fair credit balance, augmented by a quota from the canteen fund, which R was deemed advisable to hold. The future of the association rested entirely with the support given by returned soldiers in the district. Emblems for school children had been distributed to every child in every school in the district and 200 poppies were sold in Waverley on April 18. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Dr. P. V. Graves; Vice-president, Mr. McKenzie; hon. secretary, Mr. Berridge; hon. treasurer, Mr. Muilbolland; hon. auditor, Mr. J. C. Gray; committee. Dr. J. P. Duncan, and Messrs. L. R. Neilson, C. E. Mountfort, 8. G. Johnston and L. Hurley. Votes of thanks were accorded the hon. auditor and to Aliss B. Elmslie, ot the Girls Club, for her assistance in the disposal of poppies this year, when

all but two were sold. Appreciation of the support given by the A'averlcy Patriotic Association was expressed by the president Dr. Duncan appealed for more activity ci: the social side ami urged that die .smoke concert and dance be re mine.l. Roberts, of Patea, both being present at the invitation of the executive committee, adddressed the returned soldiers on maMeit of great interest to them and at the conclusion of each address the president’s thanks to each speaker was carried by applause.
