FREE AMBULANCE

FIRST ANNUAL MEETING. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet at the first annual meeting of the St. John Free Ambulance Society, last evening, Mr. Hope. Gibbons, patron, referred in highly complimentary terms to the committee’s work in establishing the service on what he considered very sound lines. The speaker felt sure that the public of Wanganui would support the Free Ambulance to the extent it deserved. The interim report for 1935 stated: “For the period under review, a total of 92 cases have, been attended to, comprising 32 accidents and 60 medical and surgical cases. A distance of 14541 miles have been travelled in carrying out this work. The localities from which the cases have been transported are as under: —Wanganui 66, Ratana 2, Raetihi 1, Jerusalem .1, Aberfeldy 1, Marangi 6, Marton 1, Levin 1, Maxwell 1, Turakin 1, Banana 2,

Orofton 1, Ot-aki 1. Wangaehu 1, Hun terville 2, Marton Junction 1, Bull (Curls Bridge) 2, Paparangi J. “A number of members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade have already given the permanent staff valuable assistance and have rendered a total of 76 hours of volunteer duty with the service. Early in the year an agreement on terms entirely satisfactory to your committee was effected with the Wanganui Hospital Board. The board obtained the consent of the Minister of Health for a"grant of £250 to be made and an interim payment of £5O has been applied for and obtained, the balance being available when required.
