SHORTER SCHOOL HOURS
DECISION IN DUNEDIN. ( F«r A'ioeiat! ;<i ). DUNEDIN, Feb. 5. Instructions have been given to ail town schools to close from to-day after the morning lessons. The Education Board chairman (Mr. Wallace y commenting on the Minister’s instruction, said that it should have been sent out a week ago to enable the boards to give proper consideration to the matter. '1 he first instruction he had was when he read this morning's paper. The decision with regard to country school.* rested with country members of the board. CANTERBURY DECISION. HEADMASTERS’ OPINIONS. (Per F.-esa Maoclatlon CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 5. In accordance with the Minister’s suggestion, the Canterbury Education Board to-day decided that tho schools •remain open in tho mornings only until [February 18, by which date new in* struetions will be given. Headmasters of Christchurch schools, interviewed today, gave at best only qualified approval of the scheme. Their opinion was that though the summer heat in parts of the North Island might cause exhaustion of the children, the heat, was seldom so oppressive here in Canterbury. They suggested that there would be only occasional need for clos it»g in Ihc afternoons. Cne suggestion maile was that discretionary power should be given to the headmasters.
