I. | The taking of testimony speeded up in the Hauptmann trial to-day, both the. prosecution and the defence ex pressing a desire, to finish the case this week, whiuh is the sixth of the. trial. Mr. Reilly continued to press two main contentions, namely that Hauptmann was at home on the important dates of the case, and that Violet Sharpe, the Morrow's English maid, was in sonic way involved in the kidnapping. Two d' ,r once witnesses were produced, who swore to alibis for Hauptmann on the night he allegedly icceivod the ransom from Dr. Condon, and the night he was charged with passing a ransom note in a theatre. Another witness testified that on the night of the kidnapping, when Violet was supposed to have been keeping a clandestine engagement at a roadhouse speakeasy, the witness saw her near the Hudson river ferry carrying a baby’s blanket The defence m«Je a surprise move, adducing evidence to-day that an exact duplicate of the kilnap ladder had broken under a weight nf ISOlbs., whereas Hauptmann weighed slightly more.
