ATTRACTING TOURISTS

NEW AVENUE SUGGESTED B USIN' ESSMEN ’8 CONN ECTIONS A proposal for advertising New Zealand abroad by taking advantage of the relations between business houses, was before the executive of the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce last evening. A letter was received from Mr J. W. Clinkard, general manager of the Department of Industries, Commerce, Tourist and Publicity. He pointed out that there was an excellent avenue for the distribution of publicity concerning the charms and attractions the Dominion had to offer. The avenue ho suggested was the connX'ions, business or otherwise, with firms and individuals residing overseas. Mr Clinkard said that if people would be good enough to supply him with a list of addresses of peo>Z they considered would be intereste 1 and possibly attracted to New Zealand, he would undertake to forward descriptive literature to those addresses. At I the same time he would enclose a card conveying the joint compliments of the New Zealand business house, or individuals, and of the department. “By this means we can secure a direct ap-

proach to an important clast of potential visitors,” added Mr Clinkard. “I think it js a very good idea,” said Mr E. M. Silk, deputy-chairman, who presided in the absence of Mr A. S. Burgess. “There is no doubt that the Government departments are much more eager for busisess Ilian they were. ’ ’ The letter was jive vel, and it was agreed that members of the chamber and businessmen generally should be informed of the offer. I A discussion took place 'oneerning 1 the Wanganui tourist traflie. Members ' thought that tourists might be induced 1 to stay in Wanganui overnight after coming down the river from I’ipiriki. Their stay, it was thought, would be of considerable value to the retail trade. The tourist ami jmblicily committee was appointed to make investigations to enquire whether a suita'bl arrange»roent could be made.
