HIGHWAY CLOSED

ACTION AT ROTORUA. EXPERIMENTAL WOK K. AUCKLAND. Jan. 30. ■ The sudden closing of the Rotorua main highway between Ngongotaha and Rotorua yesterday was the cause of several complaints received by the Automobile Association. Investigation revealed that a special trial length of sealing was being laid down. The process was a new one, which was dependent on The base course being properly laid and firmly consolidated. It was expected that the new process would enable the Alain Highways Board to cope more effectively with the dust menace on the roads in the province. It is reported to be cheaper than ordinary ’tar-sealing or penetration and ou this account the method should enable long lengths of dustless road to be constructed in the thermal districts iu quicker time. The highway has been kept open during the past few days while the work was in progress, but in spile of notices requesting slower speeds, and men on duty supervising traffic a number of motorists persisted in driving at speeds which threatened to interfere with rhp work and cause considerable additional expense. It was on this account that it was decided to close the road. The Automobile Association has been assured that a certain rough section of the detour route will be graded immediately, and that, it is expected the highway will be reopened by the end of the week.
