Two London Fires
DOCK WAREHOUSE DAMAGED | BLAZE IN A HOSPITAL [British Official Wireless.] Received Jan. 21, 6.12 p.m. RUGBY, Jan. 19. Over 590 firemen and a large force of police were called out to deal with a fierce night outbreak of fire at a grease and oil warehouse, Millwall, London docks. The flames, which were exceptionally fierce, were rapidly quelled, but the fire smouldered many hours. A close watch had to be kept round the buildings and in consequence of the precautions taken the area of lire was restricted. There were exciting scenes at a fire in the City of London Institution, Bow Road, where 290 aged bedridden men and women, some of whom were blind, were hurriedly wrapped in blankets and carried out. Sixty nurses who were available for rescue work placed the patients in wheeled chairs or wheeled out the beds themselves to safety.
