Taylor left yesterday for a short holiday in the Wairarapa district, returning on Saturday. GENERAL According to the engineer’s report at the last monthly meeting of the South Taranaki Electric Power-board last Friday, a canvass is to be made shortly for consumers in the Opaku district. There is every prospect of a line being run to this district of the Patea County, which lies close to the boundary of the Wanganui and South Taranaki Power Board’s district. Mr F. Parsons reported to the meeting that there were some 700 cows in ’.he Opaku and Otautu district where ranges would also he required by some settlers in addition tu the lighting power. The peak of the season at the local freezing works has seen records made and broken again. At pi esent there are some 230 employees on the pay-roll, which is the largest number that has been employed there at any time. Lorries loaded with sheep and lambs have boon driven into the works at all hours of the day, while the railways have been kept particularly busy arranging rolling stock. The killing record for one day now stands at over 3000, which

was made ten days ago, that number comprising sheep alone. Arrangements are well in hand for the returned soldiers’ picnic for their youngsters, which is to be held next Sunday at the Patea Domain. CRICKET In spite of a drizzling rain, but with a warm temperature, the match between Patea and Hawcra Old Boys was played last Saturday at Patea, resulting in a win for Old Boys by 27 runs. Patea put up a good score. The wicket was slightly troublesome, and the rain made play difficult. Old Boys batted first, and with W. Barker 33, Duke 29, Beamish 17. and Thomas 10, ran the score to 133. McKenna was in deadly form, and •clean bowled three batsmen with swinging balls. Archer was the next successful, his fast, short hop balls keeping the batsmen fairly quiet. Patea made 10C» in their strike, with S. Edwards 17, Gibbs 25, McKenna 19. being the double-figure scorers; with eight wickets down for 65, Patea in the last two wickets, put on exactly 41 runs, thanks to the hard hitting of McKenna, who was thu only Patea batsman to hit a six during the day.
