scon FIRST IN HANDICAP DUTCHMEN AWARDED PRIZE [By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright] Received Nov. 5, 19.40 p.m. MELBOURNE, Nov. 5 Official placings in the handicap air race are: Alessrs C. W. /k. Scott and T. Campbell Black (Britain), D.H. Comet 1 Alessrs K. D. Parmentier, J. J. Moll, Vanbrugge and Pi.ne t Hun..no t Douglas D.C.2 2 Mr C. J. Melrose (Australia), Puss Moth 3 As Scott won the speed race, he is not eligible for the. handicap prize, this being won by Parmentier. Melrose takes the second prize. The net flying times of all handicap competitors are: Scott 64 hours 48 minutes; Parmentier, 76 hours 38 minutes; Afclrose, 79 hours, 17 minutes; Stodarr, 79 hours 32 minutes; AlcGregor. 82 hours 43 minutes; Hewett, 85 hours 42 minutes; Hansen, 87 hours 45 minutes. As Parmentier has accepted the first handicap prize, the second spe-ed prize goes io Turner, and the third to Waller. REMARKABLE PERFORMANCE GREAT TEST EOR COMETS. Jones and Waller in the de Havilland Comet is all the more remarkable because Jones took the place at the last minutes of Air. Bernard Rubin, owner of the ’plane, who was prevented by a serious illness from flying in the race to Melbourne. Jones had had practically no previous experience of the Comet machine, which, had been designed by tie Havilland’s under some pressure of time and was in fact flown by all pilots “straight off the drawing board.” None of the crews of the three Comets had received the machines long enough before the event to allow a reasonable amount of practice, and expert opinion in these circumstances estimated the odds at 3 to .1 against any of the Comets reaching Melbourne. Consequently air circles arc greatly impressed at the success with which the new type passed so severe a tost. RETURNING HOME DUTCHMEN LEAVE DARWIN. .Received Nov. 5, 11.5 p.m. DARWIN. Nov. 5. The, (Dutch airliner which was a competitor in the air race, piloted by Parnicntier and Moll, which left Brisbane at 5 a.m. on Sunday, arrived al Darwin at 3 p.m. to-day after a fast trip, and resumed for Koepang and Bali at dawn t o - d ay.
