WISDEN CUP MATCH ! VICTORY TO AUCKLAND A badminton tournament was held last night between teams representing the Vvestern districts and Auckland, and resulted in a win for Auckland by 10 matches to 6. n There were some very close matches and the deciding factor was Auck- a land’s ability in the doubles, where a They showed much better combination than the opposition. Two notable Wan- p ganui successes were the victories s gained by Barnett over T. hllett and Miss Bethwaite over Miss Ellett. Both losers have heid New Zealand titles. Another local success was that achieved by Handley and Miss Freioar who defeated Neale and Miss Waters. Championships To-day. The New Zealand badminton championships open at the Drill Hall this afternoon. There are some 150 competitors, and in nearly every case the present tide holders will appear to defend them. Prominent playc:s who will be seen in action include I’3 J. Kishworth. J. Vaughan, and E. Rousse'l. all of Wei lington. Misses Ellett, Ramsay, and Mrs. Wren, of Auckland, while there is a strong contingent of women players from Wellington. Th-e hours of play will be from 2.30 till 5, and front 5.30 till 10 p.m. The following are the present title holders:— Men’s Singles—J. Ellett (Auckland). Women’s Singles.—Miss J. Ramsay (Auckland). Men’s Doubles. —N. R- C- W ilson and A. E. Sandral (Wellington). Women’s Doubles. — Miss A. Ellett and Airs. Wilson (Auckland). Mix’ed Doubles.—l. F.llett and Miss J. Ellett (Auckland). The Savage Club A return match between the “Okirae” and R- Campion team and the Savage Club badminton players has been played, results being as follows: M«n’s Singles.—Crawford 15.
