PUBLIC OPINION. MANAWATU MOUNTED RIFLES. i Sir, —It is proposed to raise a troop in the Marton district for the Mana- | watu Mounted Rifles. The conditions of service are such as should cause no inconvenience in a farming district. The nine days’ camp is to be held in the autumn. Six half-day parades for musketry, etc., will be held during the year. Men are to provide suitable horses, but all saddlery, boots, uniform, etc., are provided. Pay of rank for 12 days a year will also be provided. The total number required for a full troop is 28. The line spirit and com- , raderie displayed by the old volunteers is not dead. 1 already have the names of a number of young men of a particularly fine type. Perhaps there are some likely recruits among your readers who might feel like combining duty with pleasure and joining up. if so, 1 would be pleased to receive their J. B. S. DUDDING. Marton. AMATEUR BOXING. TO-NIGHT’S TOURNEY. Followers of boxiug should enjoy excellent entertainment at the Alarton Civic Theatre to-night, when some goud bouts will be decided. A glance at the matchings and the calibre of the boxers will reveal some high-class bouts. The lads are mure than usually keen in view of the championships to be held this month. The bouts arranged will commence at 8 p.m, L. Hill (trained by Candy, Palmerston North) v. J. Middleton (Wilsoii, Marton). Both are novices. Les Kiley (Phillips, Marton) v. Ray McNeill (Carroll, \\anganui). Riley had his first bout (exhibition) at Taihape this season. McNeill fought and defeated Tom Jackson and lost to Ron Ward in Palmerston North. Don Stent (Wilson, Marton) v. B. Riley (Rata). Stent lost to Ron Ward in Palmerston North. Bailey is a novice. George Downs (Kingi, Taihape) v. Ossie Gibbons (Feilding). Both tnese boys were at one time in Phillips’ School, Downs having four bouts for three wins and one loss. Gibbons' latest bouts were in defeating A. Young, Taihape, and A. Gahn, Fciming. L. Burns (Gibbons, Feilding) v. C. Hart (Candy, Palmerston North). These boys fought a draw alter an extra round was ordered in Palmerston North recently. C. Hart also defeated A. Masters at Feilding. Laurie Mercer (Kingi Taihaije) v. C. Cameron (Gibbons, Eeilding). Mercer defeated S. Hitchcock at Taihape. Cameron defeated Al. Gahn at Palmerston North and lost to A. Hart and was awarded a trophy for the best loser at Eeilding. L. J. Anderson (Firth, Feilding) v. W. Robertson (Hunterville). Anderson won his bout against Mudgway at Feilding. Robertson has not lought this season, but has made his bow to Marton audiences previously. M. Wheeler (Poupard, Kongoten.) v. A. (Deere (Carroll, Wanganui). Wheeler is a goud boxer, but Deere ha-s proved his ability. This should be a. good bout. J. Adams (iTeailding) v. G. Lang (Ryan, Masterton). Adams defeated Barnau at Feilding last week. Lang is a.massive boxer and is in great form. He is a great footballer in the Wairarapa. Kay Farrow (Phillips, Marton) v. J. Wilkinson (Ryan, Alasterton). Farrow is an improved boy, having defeated Denham, Hart and C. Walker this season. Wilkinson has a great record in the Wairarapa. T. Carter (Candy. Palmerstun North) v. J. Murphy (Ryan, Alasterton). O’Neill won his bout against Tom Carter at Palmerston North. Murphy is a great boy and can give the hard rtuff when pushed. 11. Alitchell (Carroll, Wanganui) v. A. Hart (Candy, Palmerston North). Alitchell is a hard, punching welterweight. but will find a clever boy in Hart, who defeated Cameron at Eeilding last week. J. Thornton (Taihape) v. T. McCord (Ryan, Alasterton). —This is a special contest, Thornton having drawn with McMahon at Taihape and McCord having lost a close decision to AlcAlahon in Palmerston North. Jock Wilson (Alarton) v. Tommy Carroll (Ryan, Alasterton). Jock has had a great run this year, being defeated only by George Downs in his first bout. He won the return bout in Marton. He also defeated Newlands in Palmerston North and A. Parker in Taihape. Tommy Carroll is a very rangy boxer and Jock, will have a true tost on this occasion, although Carroll was defeated by Frank Hopkins after an extra round was ordered, Hopkins winning on defence in the last round. WILLIAM MORRISON The death occurred early on Monday 1 morning of Air. William Alorrison, of Cliff Road. Alarton, after a lung illness. The deceased gentleman, who was 64 years of age, and a son of the late Wil--1 liam Morrison, wa.s born at Fern Flats 1 and had spent the whole of his life in the Alarton district. He was wellL j known and highly respected and although of a retiring disposition, took a . ‘ keen interest in the welfare of the dis- ’ trict. He leaves a wife and six daugh- . ters and a son—Airs.
