OBITUARY
FANNY DAVIES, PIANISTE. LONDON, Sept. 2 The death is announced of Fanny Davies, piauiste, aged 73. Fanny Davies was born on the island of Guernsey in 1861 and began to : play the piano before she was two. in- ' heriting her musical talent from her 1 grandfather, who played the ’cello. She was educated at Leipzig Conservatorium under Reinecke and Oscar Paul and with Madame Clare Schumam at Frankfort. At 61 years of age Fanny Davies played Beethoven’s Sonata, ’ with Funeral March (without octaves), but made her first appearance after studies at the Crystal Palace in 1885. Thereafter she played frequently at concerts, in association with Joachim and Piatti, and later travelled on the Continent, becoming a great friend of Brahms. Fanny Davies gave the first recital ever given in a church (Bloxham, 1921) and later in Westminster Abbey and other cathedrals. Several of her lectures and articles on music have been published.
