RUGBY FOR CHARITY

NEXT SATURDAY’S EFFORT POLICE, PRESS, BANKS AND OTHERS. Representatives of the Wanganui bands met at Spriggens Park yesterday in company with a representative of the Police and Press committee, the purpose being to plan out the route of march for the bands, which are combining to give a marching display in connection with the Charity Day effort next Saturday. The two brass bands—Garrison and Queen’s Own—will give a massed bands march and counter-march and there will be a spectacular display of contest marching by the Highlanders. In addition, the three bands are participating as units to assist tho day. They will leave the Post Office next Saturday at quarter hour intervals to march to the ground—Queen’s Own at 2 1 o’clock, Garrison at 2.15 and the Highlanders at 2.30. At 3 p.m. sharp the marchings display takes place. Following that, the Garrison Band will play the Wellington Police team and 1 the combined team of Wanganui Police and Press on to tho field. Mr. Tom. ‘ Gray’s march, “Police and Press,” will .awaken memories of the beginning J of the campaign which has been conducted annually for the good cause. Half-time in the Police match has been fixed so as to coincide with the arrival of a “Runfurly Shield,” which has been posted from Hawke’s Bay addressed “Doc. Adams, from Norm. McKenzie.” This precious article, guarded by a parade of miniature police, will be played in from the main gate to tho field and to the centre of 1 the stand by the Wanganui Highland 1 Pipe Band. With due pomp and cere- f niony it will be presented to the pre-

ju dhi uu picsuuicu lu lue pre sident of the Wanganui Rugby Unior (Dr. G. J. Adams) to be hung in the hallowed halls of Wanganui Rugby. A “sole selector,” the man who picked a Wanganui team which licked the ’Bay by 44 to nil, will make the presentation, and the doctor will reply in suitable strain. “On the Ball” will be played by the Garrison Band immediately following the reply and the two teams will go back to their game. At the finish of the game the teams will join hands in the centre of the field, and sing “Auld Lang Syne,” accompanied by the. Queen’s Own Band. That will signalise the end of the day. Several well-known Wanganui artists are co-operating with the committee in an effort to make the day successful. A “stunt” is being planned for the Banks and Public Services’ match concerning “Gold,” “Mr. Mortgagee,’’ “Mr. High Interest,’’ “Mr. Reserve Bank,’’ “Mr. Monetary Reform”—they are all to play parts if the scheme can be finalised.
