CHAMPIONSHIP RACES WELLER THE BEST SENIOR SHERLOCK WINS THE JUNIOR COURSE IN SOGGY CONDITION Running over 6$ miles of soggy country, members of the Wanganui Harrier Club contested their annual race for the junior and senior championships on Saturday afternoon. They found that the rain which fell earlier in the week had made the paddocks soft. The result was that tne going was very difficult in places, which had the effect of slowing down the progress of the race, so that only two runners, C. Weller and A. Bourgeois, ran the distance in under 40 minutes. Weller won the senior championship, while Sherlock won the junior event. The sealed handicap was won by A. Bourgeois, who ran exceptionally well. The event started on Spriggens Park and finished there in front of the grandstand. When the runners left the mark Meikle went to the front and was followed by Sherlock, both of whom were passed by Weller and Bourgeois during the following mile. At Parsons Street, half a mile further on, Weller had taken the lead from Bourgeois by 50 yards, while a similar distance separated Bourgeois from Sherlock. Penberthy was then running fourth, 60 yards behind Sherlock, and was followed by Kiddle, Pepper, pickworth, Penberthy, Meikle, Hopper, Hurst, Carr, Arnold, Bevege, Hallam and Harrison followed in that order with varying intervals between the run,ners. Ag the end of Devon Lane there was a slight alteration in the leading positions, Kiddle and Pepper having passed Sherlock, while Penberthy had left Pickworth slightly behind. Park easily m 38min. 46secs. C. H. Watson was second and AV. G. Taylor (Timaru) third. AUSTRALIAN RECORD FOUR RUNNERS DEAD-HEAT Received Aug. 19, 7.5 p.m, SYDNEY, Aug. 19. What is believed to be an Australian record was created when, after running five miles, four runners deadheated in a cross-country event. MARTON HARRIERS TODD CUP RACE The sixth and final Todd Cup race was run on Saturday, when the track record was broken by C. Hill, who registered the excellent time of 39min. 49sec. for the distance of 6| miles. F. Hill finished in second place, giving him a total of nineteen points and thereby winning the keenly-contested Todd Cup. Tho total points of each runner for the six races are as follows: F.
