BOXING AT AUCKLAND
HUGHES BEATS McKAY. ( Per Press Association ). AUCKLAND, July 2. The professional lightweight boxing contest between Archie Hughes (Auckland) and Johnny McKay (Gisborn-e) resulted in a win for Hughes on points at the end of the scheduled ten rounds. It was a first-class contest with both men willing to fight from beginning to end. Hughes displayed excellent ringcraft and his clever footwork enabled him to avoid blows which otherwise would have had telling effect. TOMMY DONOVAN AGAIN ( Per Press Association ). HASTINGS, July 2. A 15-round boxing contest was held at Waipukurau to-night. Tommy Donovan (9.5). of Napier, defeated Jim Griffin (9-10), of Takapau, on points. Donovan took the fight to Griffin al! the way, the latter having to receive heavy punishment on many occasions. The winner’s superior ringcraft and penchant for infighting gave him many points. This was Donovan’s second win in a week.
