CENTENARY MEDAL

CONTROVERSY OVER DESIGN Received July 2, 10.10 p.m. SYDNEY, July 2. A controversy is in progress between Victoria and New South Wales concerning the design of the Victorian centenary medal, on one side of which is a ram’s skull and ear of wheat, and on the obverse a high tension electrical transmission tower. The designer, a Sydneyite, replying to criticism, declares that he wasmsked to provide an unusual design, and did so, and even now he is prepared to submit something more orthodox. The latest critics of the medal are the graziers’ organisations, who describe it as a false symbol, a repulsive caricature, and an unwarranted reflection on the. primary industries of Australia. Thev do not criticise the artistic merit of the design, but merely object to the ram’s skull, which is suggestive of death by drought, while the single ear of wheat is suggestive of la‘ck of fertility.
