OBITUARY
MR GEORGE BEVEGE The death took place at Pio Pi.i), To Kuiti, on June 22, of Air. George Bcvegc, at the ago of 75 years. Ab. Bcvege was one of the oldest ad| most highly-respected residents of the Pio Pio district, lie was in days gone by an old servant of the Railway Department as a painter, residing at Eastown, and from there he look up - business in Elt ham as a painter and paperhanger, later going to To Kuiti, where he set up a very good .business. : About two years ago Air. Bcvege YI eldest son James died in the Hamilton Hospital as a resu. t of illness eon-1 traded in the .South African War, in which he served with the New Zealand troops. Mr Bcvege then took over his late son’s farm at Pio Pio and had lived there ever since, and was one of the oldest directors of the Pio Pio Dairy Factory and sat on the Board of Directors for many years. He was also one of the most ardent workers to have a school established at Pio Pio and it was largely due to his efforts that the settlers were successful in having the school building substituted for the tent as first used. The late Mr. Bevege was a most popular figure in the district and was universally tc speeted by all he came .in contact with, and was a line example of the early pioneers of the King Country. Air. Bevege was a son of the late Air. James Bcvege. of Auckland, and a brother of the late Air. Herbert Bevege, of Aramoho. Another brother and a sister predeceased him about six years ago and his wife passed away four years ago. There are two sisters stil li\ing, Mrs. AI. Martin, of Auckland and Airs, A. Potter, of Whangarei, and one son, Air. Garner Bcvege, and a daughter, Mrs. IL Box (both of Pio Pio) to mourn the loss of a lovi. brother and father. The great respe. i in which he was held, was proved by the large and representative gathering that took place at Pio Pio on Sun day afternoon, when the interment took place at 1 ■ cemetery there. The large number of floral tributes also testified to the esteem in which he was held. The Legion of Frontiersmen provided a guard of honour and at the graveside the l-’oresters’ burial service was carried out.
