MANIA FOR BOOKS
UNDERGRADUATE ’ S LAPSE THEFTS OVERLOOKED LONDON, June 12. The temptation to steal books to assist him in his studies, developing into a mania to possess books, was responsible for a Cambridge undergraduate, David Anderson, being charged with stealing 508 volumes from various bookshops and libraries in the. last five years.
Anderson’s father is a milkman, ana his parents sacrificed everything, including holidays, for 20 years, to give their brilliant son an opportunity for a good education. It was explained to Anderson’s credit that he spent every vacation delivering milk in order to give his brothers and sisters a holiday. He won the King’s Gold Medal at King’s Lynn Grammar School. His Majesty personally investing him with it. He also won a prize by votes of his schoolmates for the scholar with the most outstanding record. While at Cambridge he went without food in order to buy books. The University authorities expressed their willingness to have Anderson back, and the Bench therefore bound him over for two years. It is announced that the books have been restored to the owners
