NEW SOCIETY' FORMED

REVIVING COMPETITIONS A PROVISIONAL COMMITTEE. I FURTHER MEETING CONVENED. Another instance of the returning tide of prosperity in Wanganui was indicated at the City Council Chambers last evening when a gathering of citizens unnimously decided that annual competitions should be revived in Wanganui. Jt was agreed that a body to be called the'Wanganui Competitions Society (Inc.) should be formed, those present stating their wi’Hngness to become members. Anotner public meeting is to be calico for July 9, when it is hoped that all intending members will be present to elect an executive. Mr. G. H. Irott. a member of the Oily Council, presided last evening, and a provisional committee comprising Mr. Trott, Air. F. C. Atkinson, Air. O. Hales, Mr. F. Webb Jones and Air. P. Alcpham was appointed to bring down a report to the next meeting Both Air. Trott and Air. Atkinson referred to the aims and objects of the society, and Mr. Hales sketched the rise and fall of the former society, which went out of existence in 1931. The proposal was made that competitions should be held during Al ay. lasting from a Tuesday until Saturday inclusive. U was also suggested that members’ subscriptions be 10s 6d. Several offers of support were re ceived by Air. Atkinson at the outset of the meeting, including one from Mr. Will Hutchess, Afus. Bat?., while Afr. Eric Lind offered his voluntary services as secretary for the first year of the society’s activities, and Air. L. Holland offered to act as honorary treasurer Air. Paul Latham referred to efforts made by competition societies in other parts of the IDominnon, and said that no town was making a financial success ol their competitions. They were, however, encourging art, and were helping embryo artists and teachers. It was felt in Palmerston North, Alastcrton. Hawke’s Bay, and Hamilton, that there was an obligation on the part of the citizens to the artisic side of the com munity to keep the competitions going. They were not conducting competitions with the idea of making money. The financial side, however, would be the responsibility of a strong committee, said Mr. Latham. Air. Atkinson pointed out that it would cost from £250 to £3OO to hold competitions over five days. He also stressed the point that the socictj was not out to make money, but if money were made, it would be used to provide scholarships, as had been done previ ously. Any profit would be used in the cause of art. .
