LEICESTER MATCH

SECOND DAY’S PLAY AUSTRALIANS DECLARE McCABE 108 NOT OUT. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, May 7. The second day’s play in the circket match, Australia v. Leicestershire, ■ placed the Australians in a highly favourable position. Their innings, in reply to Leicestershire’s 152, was declared closed when 368 runs had been scored for the loss of five wickets, and at the end of the day the county in their second innings had made 35 runs for the Joss of one wicket, leaving them with 182 to make to save defeat by an innings. After Bradman had been dismised for 65, Kippax and McCabe did most of the scoring for Australia, McCabe making a century without losing his wicket. Play was resumed in brighter and less blustering conditions, and the attendance increased to three thousand after lunch. The wicket was dead easy, but rain overnight made the outfield slow. With the score at 61 for one wicket, Brown (24) and Bradman (26) continued Australia’s innings. Bradman early cover drove and hooked deliveries by Smith to the fence, but other hits worth four runs slopped into the sodden turf. Brown batted with quiet grace, not forcing the pace, and he had added only a few runs in half an hour when, playing late to Smith, he snicked the ball on to the wicket. Kippax, timing well, made some pretty strokes, and pulled one ball from Geary to the boundary. A good deal of smoke from neighbouring factories was drifting over the ground and this did not improve matters for the batsmen. Bradman, after a quiet spell in the fifties, began punishing Geary, but he badly missed a late inswinger and was bowled, the ball taking the off stump. He was less adventurous during his stay of ninety-five minutes. With Kippax and Darling associated, the scoring quietened, Geary clearly worrying Darling. Kippax took seventyfive minutes to make 26 runs. Darling was speedier, though not so safe, and his end came when he was brilliantly caught by the wicket-keeper wide on the leg side. McCabe, who was immediately aggressive, had a life when Hazelrigg failed ro make a catch in the slips. Kippax at last opened out and reached 50 in 140 minutes. McCabe’s half-century took eighty minutes. Kippax had another life at 70. Geary dropping the ball at forward short-leg. Although Kippax was still miss-hit ting badly, a century partnership was raised in ninety minutes. Kippax, in trying to pull a ball from Shipman, was easily caught at square leg. He had batted for 225 minutes, and his score of 89 included eight 4’s. His innings was not impressive. McCabe added only four runs in twenty-five minutes, and when Ifis score was 90 ho turned a ball from Astill straight into Smith’s hands at fine-leg, but the catch was dropped. Barnett punched the bowling on its merits, but McCabe was quiet, reaching his century after 160 minutes at the wickets. Bradman declared the innings closed at 5.30 p.m. McCabe’s score of 108 not out included twelve 4’s. Barnett made a bright 30 in thirty-five minutes, and was unbeaten when the innings, which had occupied 355 minutes, was closed. In the forty-five minutes remaining for play Leicestershire scored 35 runs for the loss of .Shipman’s wicket only. The bright patch in the closing stages was supplied by Dawson in hitting two cracking 4’s in one over from Darling, Ebeling worked hard without creating any impression. The third day’s play is to begin at 11 a.m., stumps to bo drawn at 5 p.m. if the match is not over by that time.
