INLAND ROADING

Sir. —Re an interesting article in Saturday’s “Chronicle” about inland reading of the back country up the Wanganui River. I beg to make the following statement, as ancient history should be as accurate as possible:—Mr. Pemberton is mentioned as the first settler in the Ohutu. Now the first settlor in the Ohutu was the late Mr. David Mason and the next his brother. Mr. Archibald Mason. When the Ohutu block came into the market, is was the year 1905. As the leases were not sunposed to be too good they hung fire for some time. After careful thought and legal advice the late Mr. D. Mason took one up. then his brother, and it was not long before many wero taken up. As regards the track to the sections, then' was a pack track for some years along the Mangawhero, between Parapara and Raetihi before the Ohutu block came out. Ro the Mangawhero waterfalls, the late Mr. D. Mason and the writer of this article were the first Europeans to view the falls. Then the next Europeans to view them were the late Mr. T. L. H. Battle with a Canadian artist named Mr. de Forest.— Yours sincerely, R. A. MONTGOMERIE. Taukoro, April I.
