The following are guests at Foster’s Hotel: Miss M. C. Beale and Miss E. Al. Seavill (Hamilton), Mr. 8. A. Glea dow, Air. J. R. Rutherford, Miss N. Aston, Mrs. M. J. Western and Mr. R. Thompson (Wellington); Air. and Mrs. D. H. Stewart (Waimarmara, Hawke’s Bay). The death occurred yesterday of Air. James (“Jimmie”) Alaxwell, of Westmere, at the age of 71. He was a very fine type of worker, who had resided in Westmere for over 30 years, during 28 of which he was in the employ of Air. Robert Laird. His birthplace was Helensboro, Scotland, and he became a highly-respected member of the community in which he lived in the country of his adoption. He was a staunch supporter of the Westmere Presbyterian Church. “Jimmie” will be greatly missed. He leaves two sisters, Airs. Knudsen and Miss Alax well, both of Wanganui. The Next Musical Comedy Some difficulty is being experienced by the Wanganui Amateur Musical aud Dramatic Society in choosing its next musical comedy. The professional stage has encroached very solidly upon old-time productions, many of which, u few years ago, would have been regarded as dated beyond recall. The recent success of the “Alerry Widow and “Floradora,” and the current season of “A Country Girl” in Auckland, shows which arc being revived by piufessionals, indicates that there is a marked sway in public taste for th best old, and not new, musical come 'lies. The success the Wanganui Ainu teur Musical and Dramatic Society nie> with quite recently with “A Country Girl” also indicated the. trend of pub lie demand, and gave the lie direct to those who critically referred to the production as “dated.” But wliil ■ theie is a public clamour for resurrections like “A Country Girl,” in,a teur organisations find the field oi selection considerably narrowed. Professionals will not release the ligii.-. Wanganui had eves for “Going Up,’ “So Long, Lctty, ” “The Merry Widow” and productions of a like nature, but it see.in iNat the profes sional stago has lifted a hand with an instruction “Thou shalt hot touch.” “Wildflower.” “The Messenger Bov, ” “Mary” and even “The Bel’c of New York” arc still on the list the Wanganui society is dealing with. It will ’not be known for borne days as to I what th« choice wri be.
