WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

MANGAWEKA MEETING. Airs. Pairman presided over a good attendance of members and visitors at the February meeting on Tuesday, when Airs. Birch, of Westmere, gave a very interesting talk on her recent travels in England and the doings of institutes she visited there. This was much enjoyed by all, as was also music on a harp by a visitor, Aliss Joyce Logan. Airs. H. Dalrymple sang in her usual charming manner. The compctftion, “Alost articles packed in a slide match box,’’ was won by Airs. A. Bailey, whose box contained 132 different articles. Airs. C. Reilly, Airs. S. Dickenson, and Airs. Billinghurst, ran the winner very closely. Members were reminded of the election of a new president and committee to take place next month, and were asked to send signed nominations to the secretary not later than February 20. The hostesses were Alcsdames Pederson, Byrne, Crowffher, and Alias Zohs. ABAMOHO INSTITUTE. BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED. The third birthday of the Aramoho AVomen’s Institute was celebrated yesterday afternoon at the Methodist Hall, Aramoho. Airs Brine, president, was in the chair, and welcomed the visitors The hall was crowded, there being well over 150 members and friends present, also the presidents and representatives of other institutes, including Westmere, Fordoil, Alakirikiri, Kaitoko, AJaxwell. Okoia, and Alangaweka. Airs. 8. G. Aliller (AVcstmerc) and Airs. Ginnanc (Alangaweka), president and secretary respectively of the Wanganui Federation of AVomcn’s Institutes, and the secretary of the Aramoho Institute (Airs. F. Goodey) were on the platform, where a table was decorated with blue and gold flowers, the institute colon rs. After the welcome and the singing of the Institute Song, the visitors were entertained with an enjoyable programme. Two amusing sketches, arranged by Airs. J. Butcher, were well given, one by Alcsdames Wells and Thompson, and the second by Airs. Dr*» r and Aliss Cole. The institute singing circle contributed choruses and Airs. Elliot AVells sang four songs, ‘‘Lilac Time,” “Aly Prayer,” “Little Old Inn by the Sea,” and “Big Lady Aloon.” A competition was won by Mrs. AVells, and a second one (the lucky chair) went to Airs. V. Adams. A sumptuous afternoon tea and fruit salad and cream was served. The elaborate cake was made and iced by Airs. Revell. l l t was iced in a beautiful fretwork design and decorated with candles and rosettes in the institute colours, the rosettes being later worn by the four ladies on the platform. The cake was cut by Airs. Rookc, the first president of the institute, assisted by Aliss Young (the second president), and Airs. Brine (president). Airs. Alillen, in a happy little speech, congratulated the and expressed pleasure in joining in the birthday celebrations. She said it must be encouraging to the committee to sec so many at the function. year the members had given the value of the birthday cake and the fruit salad towards the fund for the rest cottage, and she was pleased to say that the cottage will be ready for occupation by Monday week. Alillen thanked them for their help towards the rest cottage, also for their great help at the show, no 'other federation had done so much. Airs. Ginnanc (Alangaweka), also expressed pleasure at being present for the celebrations, and again meeting many of those she had met at the show. She thanked the members for their invitation and wished them “many happy returns.” Thanks were expressed to the following for their help: Aliss Alarshall, Alessrs Rose and Guildford (judging of flowers), Airs. Butcher (sketches), Airs. Atkin (singing circle), Airs. Revell (birthday cake), and the hostesses of the afternoon, who had arranged and served the tea. It was decided to send a piece of the birthday cake to members who were unable to be present through sickness. A flower competition was held and the results wore as follows:—Decorative dahlia (over 7 inches): Airs. A. F. AVhitc J, Airs. Brooker 2, Airs. F. Carpenter 3. Under 7 inches: Airs. F. Lilburnc 1, Airs. Alorland 2. Bowl dahlias, class 6: Airs. F. Webb Jones 1, Airs. F. Carpenter 2. Posies, Airs. D. Lilburnc .1, Airs. F. Carpenter 2. The winners of the posies presented them to the president (Airs. Brine), and the secretary (Airs. F. Goodey). The function then concluded with the singing of the National Anthem, a very enjoyable time having been spent. Airs. F. Smith, of Otai.e, Hawke’s Bay, and Airs. Wackildeni. of Dunedin, were among the many visitors present.
