STRIKE On Monday, relief workers were at work as usual, with a few absentees. On Monday night a meeting of relief workers was held under the auspices of the Unemployed Workers’ Movement. The majority at this meeting decided to strike from next day. Before 7.30 a.in., pickets were out and relief workers going to report at the County Council’s depot, and at the borough work on the Parapara Road, were urged to strike. When the numbers were checked ud shortly after 9 a.m. it was found that about one third of the men on No. 5 were absent and the other two-thirds were at work, or in two or three cases had already completed their allocation for the week. The authorities were notified by officials of the U.AV.M. that a strike had been declared. Several of the men who did not report as usual in the morning, hastened to do so before night. On Wednesday there were still a few absentees, but before the close of the day it was announced that the strike had been declared off. The time for the men this week expired on Wednesday
