The Taihapc Borough Council decided on Friday evening to purchase a “Ransome” 16-inch motor jnower for £66 from a firm in Palmerston North. The machine will be used at the Taihape cemetery. The question of buying a motor mower for cutting the Oval Domain was also discussed and it was decided to write to the Taihape Cricket Association and ask what action they intend to take towards raising funds for the purchase of a mower. The- meeting was of the opinion that the cricketers would derive most benefit from the purchase of the mower and should be the first to move in the matter of raising the necessary funds. It was stated that other sports bodies were waiting for the cricketers to make a move, and would give their co-operation. The chairman of the Domain Committee (Cr. Darvill) explained that one mower would be required for the cemetery and another for the Domain. A mower that was suitable for use at the cemetery would be far too small and totally unsuitable for the Domain. It was therefore necessary to purchase two mowers. Air. Abbott, who was at present on holiday, had seen a “ Ransome ” 16-inch motor mower at Palmerston North that would be ideal for use at the cemetery. The price of the mower was £66 f.o.r. Palmerston North and the firm was prepared to sell it to the council on terms. The speaker went on to state that there was so much grass to be cut at the cemetery that a motor mower was essential. Air. Abbott had seen the mower in question and was satisfied with it. He suggested that the council write to the firm, stating that they would buy the mower now and pay for it on April J, which was the beginning of the next financial year. If these terms were acceptable to the agents, the council would ask for delivery of the mower immediately. Cr. Alay: I will move that we purchase the mower for £66 and ask for immediate delivery on the understanding that full payment for the machine will be made on April 1. The motion was seconded and carried. Cr. Loader had his vote recorded against the motion. He said that the council could not afford to buy two machines, and needed a mower for the (> “1 Domain very badly. ■ r. Darvill: We need one for the renietery still more urgently. The Mayor: We must have two mowers. If we don’t get the support from the sports bodies we expect and have to buy a mower for the Oval Domain ourselves, then we will have no alternative but to charge the various sports bodies rental if they don’t assist in buying the mower. Cr. Alay: Could wc place the matter before the local sports bodies? I will move that we ask the Cricket Association if they are going to do anything in the matter. Cr. Butler: The Cricket Club have no funds. The Alayor: We are not asking any sports body to make a contribution from its funds. We are merely asking them to assist in raising funds for the purchase of a motor mower for'[ the Oval Domain. Cr. Butler: I think all the sports bodies should be written to—not only the Cricket Association. I will move an amendment to that effect-. The Alayor: The other sports bodies are waiting for the cricketers to set the ball 'oiling. After further discussion the amendment was put to the meeting and lost. 1 Cr. May’s motion, that, the council

write to the Cricket Association about the matter, was carried. GENERAL NEWS. A young man employed cn a farm in Papakai Road fell from a cart load of hay on Friday and suffered a fractured leg.
