WHALING MISHAPS

SEVEN THIS SEASON. FACTORY SHIP DAMAGED. CAPETOWN, Dec. 20. An oil transport towing a disabled whale catcher has arrived from the Antarctic. She picked up a message yesterday that the British factory ship Southern Princess had seriously damaged her rudder in a heavy gale and was seeking shelter in the icepack. This is the seventh casualty during the present season. The caprain of the transport participated in a search for another vessel, the Berea, and found a whale with a heavy chain attached to its tail. He concluded that when the Berea over-ran the whale in order to bring it tail first it was caught by a huge wave and capsized, giving the crew no chance.
