FIRE’S CUEAN SWEEP

UNEMPLOYED MINERS’ LOSS. [ Per Press Association. 1 DUNEDIN, Dee. 20. An unemployed gold-miner, tamped about 25 miles above Glenorchy, Central Otago, had an unfortunate experience last week. His mate had gone into the township for supplies and to attend a dance. During the afternoon the remaining partner took off his clothes and entered the river for a swim. Presently he heard several explosions, and hurrying back to tho camp found that it had been completely destroyed by fire. The explosions had been caused by cartridges bursting as the fire reached them. Left without a stitch of clothing or personal property, he was compelled to walk, five miles to the nearest camp and then borrow sufficient attire to see him to Glenorchy. Public sympathy with tho two men in their misfortune was shown by generous gifts of groceries and money with which to replace their property.
