THE WESTFIELD SALE

QUALITY BEEF IN DEMAND. [ Per Press Association. I AUCKLAND, Dec. 20. The yardings at the Christmas Westfield fat stock sale were particularly heavy. In the beef market quality was not in keeping with the occasion, but good quality light weight cattle sold under keen competition and prices rose by Is per 1001 b. Heavy weight sorts also showed an improvement on recent rates. Extra choice ox made to 20. s per 1001 b.; choice and prime, 17s to 19s; secondary and plain, 14s to 16s; prime cow and heifer beef, 16s to 19s; other cow beef, J2s to 15s; etxra prime steers, £7 7s fid to 38s; heavy prime, £fi 10s to £7 ss; lighter prime, £5 12s fid to £fi 12s fid; light prime, £4 12s fid to £5 15s; small and unfinished, £2 15s to £4 15s; extra heavy prime cows and heifers, £4 15s to £5 7s fid; heavy prime £4 to £5; lighter prime, £2 15s to £4; other killablc cows, £1 5s to £2 17s fid. Sheep came forward in full numbers. Late rates were maintained for wethers and ewes sold at. improved prices. Prime wethers, 2s Id to 25s 9d; unfinished, 18s 3d to 21s fid; prime ewes, 12s 9d to 15s 9d; unfinished, 10s fid to 12s 6d; hoggets, 18s fid to 20s fid.

There was a very heavy yarding of lambs, selling going on to a late hour. Competition was keen, exporters being active. Heavy prime lambs, 20s to 20s 9d; medium prime, 18s to 19s 9d; light prime, 13s 3d to 17s 9d. Tho demand for calves was very slack and values for all classes wore considerably lower. Runners, 35s to ss; vealcrs. 18s to 575. There was a full yarding of pigs, and ; porkers sold readily at late rates, while < baconers tended to decline in value. ■ Baconers, 39s to 565; porkers 28s to n 40s.
