Saunders was born s.t Streatley-on-Thames in 1857, and was the eldest son of Cornelius Saunders. He married Kate Helen, second daughter of William Baigont, in 1877. Educated at private schools, he became a naval aichitect and marine engineer and was a pioneer ii. the design and construction of fast motor boats. He was Alotor Launch Builder by appointment to His Majesty the King, a member of the Institute of Naval Architects, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He also was a Chevalier de I’Ordro de Saint Chaiics de St. Monaco, and pre sideut ci Saunders Roe Ltd., engineers, yacht builders, designers and builders of aircraft. Another link with the early history of Wanganui has been broken with the passing at Auckland last weqk of Herbert Earl biyth at the age of 72 years. The late Air. Blyth, who was the youngcstison of the late James and Ann Blyth, of Marybank, was born at Wellington in IS6I, and came to Wanganui with his patents two or three years later. He attended the old Kaitokc School, later going to Godwin, now known as the Collegiate School. Entering the Bank of New South Wales, he was stationed at Wanganui, Christ church, \Vavcrley, New Plymouth and Auckland. As a young man the late Air. Blytii took an active interest in rowing, and was bow in the first crew to win the now historic Fitzherbert Fours, the stroke being the late Air. C. V. Powell. As a footballer he played in the Watganui representative team tint visited Nelson in the early eighties. For many years the late Mr. Blyth lived in retirement at Auckland.
