THE TURF

THE WOODVILLE MEETING SATURDAY’S FIXTURE. I LIST OF ACCEPTANCES. f Per Prc'M Association. ) PALMERSTON N., Dee. 5. MANGA-ATUA HURDLES (Of £80; P/j miles.)

IN SOUTH AFRICA

NEW ZEALAND-BRED HORSES CHIEF RULER FILLY WINS. Sir Joseph Robinson, the South African sporting owner who visited the Dominion two years ago and took back with him to South Africa three yearlings, has had a remarkable run of successes with these New Zealand-bred youngsters as a cable received by Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., over the week-end announces that the third of his purchases, Eureka 11., bad also won. Eureka 11. was a filly by Chief Ruler from Pebble 11.. and was bred by Mr John Donald, of Westmere, Wanganui. Although very speedy in the paddock it was anticipated if given time she would prove capable of staying on. The same applied to the Lord Quex—Dominantcolt bred by Mr J. Curran, of Shannon, and which is closely related to Gaine Carrington, Peter Jackson, Motere and other stayers. This colt, which races under the name of The Hahn, and Eureka 11. have both been recent winners as threc-year-oids, but it >3 not known over what distances. Itj is worthy of note that Mr Donald has a full brother to Eureka 11. in his "Westmere draft for this year’s sales and that Mr Curran is sending down a full sister to The Haka. The first of Sir Joseph Robinson’s pur-

chases was the Paper Money —Philomela colt which he called Wakatipu. This brother to. The Wensum has proved to be one of the fastest horses in South Africa and after carrying all before him last season (JJiened his winning account recently bv carrying off the Union Handicap, the big sprint race at the Metropolitan meeting. Tn a recent letter from Sir Joseph Robinson’s secretary it was stated that the New Zealand youngsters had grown into commanding horses and were expected to give a good account of themselves during the current season. It is, therefore, of great interest to know that all three have proved winners. Wakatipu, in particular, has advertised the New Zealand thoroughbred in South Africa. Bred at the Elderslie stud he is out of a particularly good producing mare and it is noteworthv that, the first foal to be born at Elderslie bv the Derby second. Iliad, son of Swynford, was out of Philomela. This is a commanding whole coloured chestnut colt, who should also make an exceptionally good horse.
