BOWLING. Matches in the South Taranaki initf- { club compelifion among bowlers marked the close vi the iiist round last Saturday. Hawera Park bowlers visited Patea and were the winners by the wide margin of 26 points. Following are the results, Patea names being mentioned first: — Martin, Parsons, Palmer, Giant 23, v. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. j One of the largest attendances tor i a monthly meeting was recorded at the meeting last Friday afternoon of the Patea Women’s Institute. Ihe down Hall supper-room was crowded, and the meeting was one of the happiest ami most interesting. Mrs. \\. M. Walton presided, and welcomed the members of the Opaku Institute, one of the Patea group. General business was conducted, and it was agreed that the annual group picnic would be held at Kakaianiea on January 17. in Mr. Huston’s paddock. Mrs. A. J. Gibbs gave a most timely and splendid demonstration of cake icing, and many hints for the decoration of Christmas cakes were learnt by Mrs. Walton referred to the loss of a member, Mis. A. T. Christensen, and a resolution of sympathy with Mr. A. T. Christensen and her sons was carried in silence, everyone standing. Members of the Drama Circle presented the play which they played attire Hawera festival, “I’m Sorry It’s Out.” Those taking part were Mrs. Maxwell (Miss Phillips), Miss Betty McCarty (Miss Stevens), Miss MHainerton, Miss O. Adams, Miss 1• Hemingway (library subscribers), Miss M. Gibbings (Mrs. Crawford, another subscriber) and her grand-daughtci, Mrs. I. Jones. Afternoon tea was served, and the large Christmas cake, made and don ated by Airs. Ramsbottom, was cut ami each member received some of it. Christmas wishes were expressed, and the meeting closed in a very happy manner. During the meeting, Mrs. Walton said that there would be no meeting in January, and asked members to hand in at the February meeting their nominations for the election of the committee which would take place in March. TENNIS. Favoured with a line Saturday, the Patea Tennis Club had two teams playing matches. One, the top team, journeyed to Stratford, taking part in the South Taranaki inter-club B grade

competition. On these courts, some very pleasant games were enjoyed by the Patea players, and although defeated, the match proved enjoyable to everyone. A strong and gusty wind playing straight down the courts made match play hard, but both team players had this obstacle to get use to. On the local courts at Patea, a match was played between the players half-way down the ladders of both Patea and Waverley, and some interesting and exciting games were played. With the splendid shelter from the south at the Domain, the south wind troubled the match players very little, and the afternoon was thoroughly enjoyed. Waverley proved the winners to exactly the same extent as Stratford did against Patea at Stratford. Dr. Graves, in thanking the I’atea Club iur their hospitality, referred to this match between the medium play ers of both clubs, as the first of a regular scries of matches. He and Air. Roberts, as presidents of both clubs, were presenting challenge vases and he hoped that to-day’s games would be the i’orerunn' i of many pleasant meetings. Air. Roberts explained that the prin ciple of the match was the enecou ragemen t of junior players; a ranking list of all players in the clubs would be made, a centre-line drawn and the three players above and below the line would comprise the teams, ('are ful thought, had been given to other details, ami it is confidently hoped that, the match would become extreme ly popular. PERSONAL. Representatives of legal films throughout South Taranaki assembled at the Carlton tea-rooms in Hawera yesterday afternoon for a farewell tea to Air. R. C. Rutherford, of Patea. After a stay of several years in Hawera and 11 years spent in I’atea, Air Rutherford is returning to Dunedin, his home town, to commence practice there. Air. !•’. W. Hamel, of Patea, president of the South Taranaki Law Society, occupied the chair and spoke of his regret at losing his partner and cordially wished him lhe best that the future could hold. Air. G. J. Bayley, representing the Hawera practitioners, also spoke in similar terms oi regret and good wishes and he was followed by Air. J. Hesse 11 (Kaponga), Air. T. E. Roberts (Patea), Air. A. Crystal (Elytham) and Mr. J. Foy ami Mr. John Houston (Hawera). Air. A. G. Bennett (Alanaia) sent an apology for his absence. In responding Mr. Rutherford paid,a tribute to his former employers, Alcssrs. Welsh, AlcCarthy and Beechey, and expressed his pleasure at being asked to attend the gathering. He said he would carry away the memory of the sentiments expressed and of his residence in both towns. Following the monthly sitting of the Patea Magistrate’s Court last Friday, reference was made to Air. R. C. Rutherford’s last appearance in the Court. The magistrate, Air. J. 11. Salmon, S.AI., made praiseworthy men tion of his work, and wished him success in Dunedin. Other legal practi tioners present also made reference, and expressed regret at his departure from Patea. RIFLE SHOOTING. The first shoot, for the Winchester was fired on the club’s range last Saturday with two shoots at 300 yards. The wind proved to be very tricky which made shooting difficult. Dep.Pres. D. Roots topped the scores with a line 93 off the rifle, with .1. Cunning ham runner-up with 87. The following are the scores of the two shoots with handicaps in parentheses:
