TE KAWAU RUGBY SUB-UNION. The first games for the Jones Knockout Cup were played on Saturday. Results wore as follows:—Ohakea 17, Awahuri 11. Rongotea won by default from Camp. 'Phe final games for the McKclvie Shield (junior), results to hand are as follows:—ljjandon 11, Huia 3. The senior game. Awrhuri v. Ohakea, played at Sandon, provided plenty of thrills. In the first two quarters Ohakea (green) had all the best of it and half-time sounded with them holding a lead of 12 to nil. The reds (Awahuri) wakened up in the last tw-o quarters and in the closing stages kept Ohakea busy defending, the final scores being 17 to 11. The reds opened play with a short kick and the groin (Ohakea) forwards rushed play to the rod twenty-five. Frecklington set his backs going from a scrum, the ball going out to Coombo, who lost the ball when on the rod lino, a force down resulting. The red forwards, with George in the van, invaded the green territory, but the defence was sound. From loose play near the centre the green backs got going and Ingram crossed at the corner. Coombe converted with a good kick. Soon after tho kick out Tartle gained some ground with a good kick, the greens lined at their twenty-five. A strong green rush was halted by Tattle. M. Sanson failed to take a high green kick and a score looked a certainty, but Ingram overran the ball. The greens maintained the attack and the ball came out for Simon Richardson to pot a good goal. The reds invaded the green half but their visit was only a short one. The ball was handed out to Ingram, who evaded a couple of weak tackles to cross at the corner. Coombe missed the kick. Change-over sounded with Coombe lining at the red twentyfive.

Harris received the kick out and lined well in the green half. Tattle set his backs going but a bad pass by Drummond spoiled. Red maintained the attack, but an over-eager kick let the greens force. At this stage Frecklington (Ohake-a) injured his leg and had to retire. From a cross kick the reds lost a chance by knocking on. Tattle sent out to Drummond, who worked the blind side but was pushed out near the red line. The reds maintained the attack and Tattle sent out for Waka to cross. C. Royal missed with the kick. From a high green kick M. Sanson was beaten by the bounce and the rush ended with an easy try at tho posts. Wercta grounding the ball. Coombo added the extra points. The reds now wakened up and for a time kept the greens busy defending. The green backs got away, but a free kick to the reds saw half-time sounded.

The third quarter opened with a spoil . of even play until the ball went out to M. Sanson, to C. Royal. A melee on the green line ended with a five-yard scrum. Tattle secured and made a dive round the blind side only to be pushed out. Tight play for a time in the green twenty-five until a mis handle let the greens away, and play went to the red twenty-five. Pearce came away from a ruck and sent on to M. Sanson, to Durie. to score well out. The kick failed. Reds maintained the attack and Tattle sent Durie and M. Sanson away and a cut in by the latter enabled him to cross for C. Royal to convert. The final quarter saw the reds attacking strongly. Tattle was getting rhe ball from the scrum but the handling was faulty and Drummond lost some chances by working the blind side too often. The greens slowly worked play to the red half but Tattle was replying with good line kicks. The final whistle sounded with the reds attacking, a force down, and the whistle sounded. Mr. S. Played as a curtain-raiser, the game between the above teams also provided a good game, the visitors, who were not able to field their regular team, met with their first reverse for the season. MINIATURE RIFLE SHOOTING. Four teams (five-a-side) took part in the Manawatu Association shoot for the Jones Shield and Collinson Shield, held at Longburn on Friday night. Tn the competition for the Jones Shield (held by the Sandon Club), the C team, all of them members of the Lumsden family, were successful with a total of 489. The victory was a very popular one.
